The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.

Summary
A system for examination of the peripheral nerves of the upper limb is described in this chapter. This includes the ulnar, median, radial, axillary and musculocutaneous nerves. The steps are inspection followed by a screen test to decide if the lesion is likely to be radial, median or ulnar. Then the nerve is examined in more detail by testing sensation and movement in relation to that nerve. Provocation tests are performed if necessary. This chapter also describes nerve compression as a result of thoracic outlet syndrome, as this may be a differential diagnosis. In the ‘Advanced corner’ Tinel’s sign and Valleix phenomenon as well as ‘double crush’ are described.

Summary
Clinical cases covering the spectrum of upper limb pathology are presented here. In the hand, these include congenital hand deficiencies, Dupuytren’s disease, rheumatoid disease, nerve lesions and tendon transfers. In the elbow, this includes osteoarthritis and in the shoulder, massive cuff tear, scapula winging and painful shoulder arthroplasty. Clinical examination findings for each of the cases are highlighted.

We present an overview of the survey for radio emission from active stars that has been in progress for the last six years using the observatories at Fleurs, Molonglo, Parkes and Tidbinbilla. The role of complementary optical observations at the Anglo-Australian Observatory, Mount Burnett, Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories and Mount Tamborine are also outlined. We describe the different types of star that have been included in our survey and discuss some of the problems in making the radio observations.

Properties of the microwave emission from HR1099 are examined in an attempt to determine whether the emission arises as gyro-synchrotron radiation from mildly relativistic electrons trapped in magnetic fields above starspots on the active K subgiant component. It is shown that radio curves do not exhibit a systematic variation in phase with the rotation rate, as one might expect for emission from a source situated above a long-lived starspot. However, there is some evidence that the radio flaring occurs at two preferred longitude zones. Whether these zones agree with starspot locations remains to be determined by light curve modelling. What we can say with confidence is that the measured spectral index of the microwave emission does not fit a simple gyro-synchrotron source model, such as that proposed to explain the observed reversal with frequency of the sense of circular polarization.

Summary
Introduction
Productive examination of the peripheral nerves in the upper limb is based on a comprehensive knowledge of the anatomy of the brachial plexus and the course of the nerves as they pass distally. Examination of the terminal components of the nerves informs us of the proximal pathology. Knowledge of dermatomal and specific sensory nerve cutaneous supply is essential (Figure 6.1).
Examination is guided by a full history. Hand dominance, main occupation, hobbies and past injuries or neurological disorders should be documented, as well as the patient’s age. Age significantly affects both the quality and quantity of nerve recovery following injury. It is better in children and young adults; the rate of nerve regeneration in children is 2–3 mm per day, compared with 1–2 mm in adults.
The nature of the injury, e.g. knife or hydraulic press, should be clearly documented, as this will have a profound impact on the results of nerve surgery. In the elective situation, localization of the site of injury along the course of the nerve may be comparatively difficult. However, enquiry should be made about previous injuries or operations in the upper limb. The timing of injury or the evolution and duration of a compressive neuropathy are important. For example, if the duration of carpal tunnel compression symptoms is less than 10 months, there is a significant chance of recovery utilizing conservative measures.
